Securing Top Talent

09 Jun 2023

Good businesses know that they are only as good as the people who are working for them, and that is why securing the services of top talent is so important in terms of growth and the bottom line. For these reasons, every business wants to secure top talent in their field, and there are several ways to make your business more attractive to these exceptional people.

Career Development and Progression Opportunities

People in the market for a career/job change will be interested in how you will help them develop their careers. This isn’t all about saying you’ll happily support them with training courses, though this is one way you can help them to succeed; it’s about giving them challenging work, giving them responsibilities to enhance their future prospects and employability, and providing them with career paths which will help them grow and develop. Letting candidates know that they won’t stagnate if they come to work with you will work wonders.

Promoting your Company Values

Potential new recruits will be interested in the type of employer you are: your company values – how you instil and promote them, and how you turn your company values into reality.

This can include such things as your approach to reward, recognition, community engagement, teamwork and the leadership model you operate. Ensure information about all of this is readily available on your website and elsewhere – and if you have any case studies to share, then share them. Providing the information they are looking for about company values and culture will help to allay any doubts and build a stronger sense of personal connection and alignment with your goals.

Your Reputation – As an Employer and a Service Provider

If you have an excellent reputation as an employer, then you should be proud of it and make sure the world knows about it. It’s a surefire way to secure interest from potential recruits – and you should mention this in much of your literature.

Mentioning your awards from, for example, Stonewall (Diversity Champions), Working Mums, the CIPD or any professional association should go a long way. Being able to mention that you are an accredited living wage employer can also boost your company's positive perception.

Likewise, if you are known as an organisation which is number one in the market for the service you deliver (or somewhere near the top) make sure you reinforce that fact in your recruitment literature, and anywhere else you can. People will always be interested in working with market leaders, whatever the field, as this is something that future employers will find impressive on their CV. It makes coming to your company a positive step, no matter how long they stay.

People who have worked in the technology field at Google or Apple have a cachet or prestige for those organisations in the technology arena that would like to achieve the same success as these more famous companies have done. Employing some of their former employees can help them feel like they are heading in the correct direction.
