Could you be overlooking Specialist Candidates?

10 Jul 2023

Finding experts in any field isn’t always straightforward. You will often go through many different CVs with different job descriptions not matching the candidate profile and this can be quite demoralising when it happens as you will be spending time on candidates that don’t seem worth your time on the face of it.

However, in order to spot the right candidate, we need to break down the fundamentals of the role. Firstly, it’s important to break the categories into points.  When we’re filling a job role, we’re not just looking at professional skills, but other factors come into play also:

-   Does the candidate match the skill set?
This is obviously one of the more important points as the reason you are recruiting is to find someone who can match the advertised skill set.

-   What additional skills do they bring to the table?
This is where some of the candidates may surprise you, bringing transferable skills from their previous employment that outstripped and exceeded your expectations. They may be an excellent leader or an expert problem solver who can find solutions when others struggle.

-   Is the candidate right for the environment?
You will know the job culture and environment better than the candidate and it is up to you to be able to match what you know of them to the environment in which they will be working.

-   In terms of personality, will they be happy in that environment?
Do they seem like they will be a good fit in terms of personality with the existing team members? Do they have the type of humour that would just work extremely well with the people who are already there? People who will obviously be a good fit are an asset to any recruiter.

-   Are they satisfied with the benefits and perks of the position?
Are they prepared to come and join the organisation if they get the chance? Is the financial package on the table enough to tempt them aboard?

-   Is there flexibility for development and training for additional skills?
If they don’t quite meet the skills that are required, it may be possible to train them in the areas that they are lacking in, if there is flexibility for development and training to bring them up to speed.

Writing these points as a starting guide will help you figure out your next move. You can add additional questions to help with your search, but figuring out what the candidate wants and what the employer needs can help you create a pretty perfect match overall.

This may seem pretty basic, but in a world where everyone is busy, the important points can sometimes be overlooked. It’s not uncommon for some recruiters to pass judgement on candidates before taking a good look at their skill set, experience and expertise and this can actually be to their detriment as they miss out on a talented candidate.
