Attracting Candidates For A Small Business

The small empire you started growing has done well; now it’s time to expand it even further as your team just isn’t big enough to get it all done. So, it’s time to get an employee or two, someone you can trust enough to be able to share some of the responsibilities with, as well as someone who will help you grow your business.

It is a big step to take on new employees when you run a small business as you are now responsible for that person’s salary every month and your success is largely intertwined with theirs in a way that it isn’t in larger companies with more employees.

Some business owners are reluctant to take on new employees as it means letting them see how their business that they have worked so hard to build operates. It may be that the formula is fairly simple once you grasp the basics and there can be a fear that a new employee may take some time to learn the business and then set themselves up as a direct competitor, using what they have learned.

This is something that will never cross the minds of most employees and if you treat them well, they will help you to build your business like never before. 

Write an appealing Job Description

For you to share some of the responsibilities you’ve been dealing with, you need to be 100% happy with the candidate you choose. Having control over what you say in the job description will allow you to be specific as you need to be; you can put in any necessities and skills you want the employee to have.

This way they have a clear understanding of what is expected from them before they start in their new role. Making the job description so specific will only benefit you as only those candidates who feel they can fill the position should apply (although there will be exceptions!).

When you're looking for a new recruit in your early stages, you need to show potential candidates what the benefits are to choosing you rather than the larger competitor. The job itself needs to draw people in and should have a job description which catches their attention, as well as spending time portraying your company’s image.

An equally important part of drawing in candidates is making sure that your job advert can be seen by the biggest audience possible, so make sure you advertise far and wide; the more potential candidates you reach, the more applications you will receive.

Promote Opportunities for Advancement

Successful small businesses are quite likely to have room for expansion within the workforce due to the growth in demand for the business. This in turn will create extra jobs and allow room for movement and progression.

If applicable to you, this should be made clear in the job description as it is something that potential candidates might not consider when choosing between a small business and a well-known larger business.

Show them that it’s an advantage to work for a smaller company!
