Pertemps are recruiting for a Design Engineer for our client based in LE19.

Main Purpose of the Job:

The principal role of the Design Engineer is to undertake design and engineering support activities within Our clients.

Key Responsibilities and KPI’s

Perform Design, Research and Development activities to assist the completion of all Company projects on time, in full and to agreed budget.

Plan your own activities for all Design and Research and Development work in line with contract requirements, using suitable task lists that can be regularly reviewed, updated and maintained current in the project folder.

In conjunction with the Engineering Manager, monitor the work activities against plan to ensure all work meets agreed deadlines and allocated hours. 

Participate in regular design reviews to ensure all necessary remedial actions are taken to ensure OTIF delivery, allocated budget hours and quality levels are met.

Understand the quality, cost and delivery implications of different technical solutions and find the optimum solution for each situation.

Ensure products are designed for lowest overall manufactured cost and with ease of assembly & maintenance in mind and meet Our clients standards.

Work with the sales department to ensure all designs meet the customer specification

Work closely with all internal customers to ensure they are aware of upcoming production requirements and plan the early release of designs if necessary to accommodate supply base limitations (especially material availability, long lead time and/or specialist processes, long lead time items, limited process capacity, etc)

 

Maintain project files information, ensuring accuracy, completion and version control.

Working with the Project Team, ensure all calculations, supplier quotations, supplier correspondence, customer correspondence, technical information, etc are copied into the project file in the appropriate section.

Regularly review project/design worksheets (“to do” sheets) and update information accordingly, keeping file copy current.

Ensure a current Bill of Material (BoM) is filed in relevant section of Project File at all times, communicating changes to the Engineering Manager, Project Director and Purchasing/Production team as appropriate.

All new parts created are to be given an estimated cost to ensure the BoM reflects the best estimate current cost.

All new assemblies/sub-assemblies created are to be given an assembly “routing” in the current MRP system (Factory Master) with estimated hours for all activities associated with achieving the assembly/sub-assembly envisaged by the design.

All new assemblies/sub-assemblies created are to be provided with assembly instructions or “build-sheets” for the Fitters with estimated hours for all activities associated with achieving the assembly/sub-assembly envisaged by the design.

 

Support the requirement to ensure that products conform to appropriate technical standards & directives (e.g. CE) as well as Health & Safety legislation.

Ensure design conformance with each products’ target market requirements as well as agreed technical standards and directives that apply (e.g. CE)

Participate in the preparation of risk assessments, Technical Construction Files and Operation & Maintenance manuals where necessary.

Consider additional Health and Safety legislation for current and new products where required by e.g. target markets, customer standards, etc.

 

Liaise with customers, suppliers and technical personnel.

Assist and support customers with Engineering, Design and Technical information whilst ensuring protection of Our clients intellectual property 

As appropriate, lead engineering, technical and design review meetings with customers and suppliers.

Identify new technology suppliers for current and future products & projects and work with them to achieve common goals.

 

Confer with project personnel and production personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems.

Attend daily project action reviews when required with the purpose of meeting the agreed overall activity plan.

Input into technical/engineering/design issues raised at reviews, providing updates on outstanding actions

Perform design handover to Purchasing & Assembly personnel, providing them with all necessary information to procure, manufacture and assemble the product according to the design intent. This will include General Assembly drawings, build sheets, etc.

 

Support in the maintenance of KPI’s.

Provide information to support the production of KPI’s for management/director review

When required, assist in the review of trends in KPI’s and implement corrective/preventive actions to improve department performance and Company profitability.

 

Assist the production of technical quotations for special machines.

Provide concept drawings/models for new, revised or special machines.

Identify and propose technical solutions, including suggested key component suppliers for special machines

Provide estimates, cost breakdowns, suppliers quotations, etc in support of producing sales quotations for special machines

 

Participate in working groups to develop best practice procedures

Support the attainment of the Company Mission.

Assist the achievement of the action plans derived from the Company’s Orbits

Support the creation of documented processes, procedures and standards for all Design & Engineering related tasks.

 

Consider health and safety within your department and throughout the company and work with others to ensure compliance with current regulations.

Ensure the safety of yourself and everyone working within your area

Ensure the safety of any visitors or customer employees when working within your area

Ensure appropriate PPE is available and used

When required, participate in the preparation of health and safety documentation including risk assessments

Report any health and safety issues to the relevant department heads

Experience of integrating quality into designs, ideally worked with ISO standards.

Commercially aware with ability to liaise with customers regarding requirements and project updates.

Proven track record of working under pressure to deliver quality work at pace.

Occasional travel UK/International.

 

Qualifications & Specific Technical Skills

 

Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Engineering Design and analytical skills, e.g. DFMEA, calculations using engineering standards.

3D modelling expertise, e.g.: SolidWorks.

Awareness of the selection of materials e.g.: composite, ferrous, non-ferrous, plastics, etc and finishes.

Understanding of fundamental principles behind design decisions gained in industrial/automation environment in special purpose machinery, bespoke and turnkey engineering solutions, e.g.: DFM and DFA

 

Salary: £35K to 40K depending on experience
